These kittens are about 13 weeks old now. They were born in an industrial park, part of a cat colony that was experiencing a population explosion. There were 6 or 7 females of breeding age, and two more who were getting close. Things were definitely out of control. Luckily, the colony's caretaker was able to find somebody who could help her trap the cats and get them spayed or neutered. They had good luck: over the course of two days they caught 10 cats (Snowball, the older cousin of these kittens, was one of them). Most of the cats were vaccinated and spayed or neutered and went back to their colony, where they will continue to have two square meals a day. But now they won't be reproducing. The kittens, Olive and Oliver, were only about 6 weeks old, so they stayed behind to get socialized and find homes. Being so young, they became friendly very quickly. The caretaker was delighted that all the cats had been caught and vetted. But about 10 days later, to her dismay, two more kittens showed up. They were more elusive than Olive and Oliver, but a little patience and determination overcame their wariness, and they too were trapped and brought inside. They are shyer than their brother and sister, since they didn't start to be socialized until they were older, but they are making progress. Arlo is afraid of strangers, and he is not yet comfortable having people walk toward him (he'd rather come to you and climb on your lap for petting). Addison is still quite timid. He hangs around with his foster mom, and he lets her pet him when he is lying in a bed, but he is still unsure about humans. He will need more patience and time to adjust to a new home. These kittens were living on Olive Street, and that's how Olive and Oliver got their names. When the last two kittens were trapped, it seemed only reasonable to give them road names too, so they were assigned the cross streets: Addison Road and R Street ("R"-lo). All the kittens are healthy and beautiful and active. Olive, the only girl, has the cutest tail you've ever seen it has an adorable white tip that is accessorized with a black band. Olive likes to "help" her foster Mom scoop litter boxes and sweep the floor. The boys don't do housework; they're too busy playing. Arlo, Addison, Olive, and Oliver are all negative for Feline Leukemia Virus/FIV and are up-to-date on their vaccinations. If you think you might be interested in adopting one or two of them, please email Janet at janetcatmom@yahoo.com to arrange a meeting. (Please include "Kittens" in the subject line.) The adoption process for the kittens will be similar to that for a CARA cat (application, contract and adoption fee). |
