Mee-Mao

Mee-mao came from a vibrant Hispanic neighborhood where voices and sounds never cease. She was seen strolling along with a black cat, presumably her boyfriend. They were street-smart, familiar with human routines, and immensely fond of being part of that landscape.

When I met Mee-mao again weeks later, she appeared cumbersome and slow. Her human friends assured me that she was pregnant. She seemed to have taken to walking solitarily past every household, occasionally receiving a pat, some food, or unvoiced sighs of pity. Her sweet nature had not changed. She followed me home where, instead of gulping down food, she lounged on the floor all night long. A few days later, Mee-mao was spayed and returned home relieved of her baggage. Her ease and content dispelled any worries over her trauma. She was, at the end of her two-week recovery, jumping on and off the kitchen table with alacrity. Soon afterwards, she developed a genuine interest in watching my Beta fish.

Unlike other cats of her age (around 2 years old), Mee-mao is not unfailingly curious about new things. She prefers human companionship to that of animals, and a peaceful environment to a noisy one. She always wants to be cuddled and her cries responded to, even though, in many instances, her meows are sheer exhibitions of her vocality.
